KCB Withstands Kabras Fightback to Win Prinsloo 7s Title
Defending SportPesa National Sevens Circuit champions KCB Rugby Club successfully began their title defence with a hard-fought 19-12 victory over Kabras Sugar RFC in the final of the season-opening Prinsloo 7s at Nakuru Athletics Club.
The triumph marked KCB’s first Prinsloo 7s title since 2017, ending an eight-year wait and earning the Bankers the KSh 150,000 winners’ prize.
KCB Withstands Kabras Fightback
Kabras Sugar seized an early advantage, racing to a 5-0 lead when Mike Lukusu pounced on a loose KCB kickoff that the Bankers failed to gather.
KCB responded immediately as Kenya Sevens international George Ooro crossed over for their opening try before the successful conversion handed the defending champions the lead.
Their advantage grew further after Jackson Lukeki was sent to the sin bin for an illegal intervention, reducing Kabras to six players. KCB capitalized on the numerical advantage as Elvis Olukusi and Vincent Onyala both crossed the whitewash, stretching the lead to 19-5 by halftime.
Kabras refused to back down. Brian Mutua scored a converted try after the break to reduce the deficit to 19-12, setting up a tense finale. However, KCB’s defence held firm, sealing the victory and launching their title defence with silverware.
Mwamba Ladies Defend Title, Zetech Oaks Sweep Division One
Defending champions Mwamba Ladies retained their Women’s Division One title with a commanding 19-0 victory over tournament newcomers Kiambaa Ladies, earning KSh 100,000 in prize money.
In the Men’s Division One final, Zetech Oaks produced the tournament’s most dominant display, thrashing Kabarak University 46-0 to lift the title and pocket KSh 70,000.
Circuit Shifts to Kisumu for Dala 7s
With the Prinsloo 7s concluded, the SportPesa National Sevens Circuit now moves to Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu, for the Dala 7s, scheduled for August 1-2. Teams will be looking to build momentum as the race for the 2026 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit title continues.
