World Cup 2026 scores, live updates: Messi nets hat trick for Argentina; Norway rolls; Mbappé lifts France; Austria vs. Jordan on tap
The 2026 World Cup continues on Tuesday with a full slate of Group I and J action, and to say it’s been an eventful day doesn’t quite cover it.
France kicked off the day with a 3-1 win over Senegal as Kylian Mbappé and Bradley Barcola provided the goals to give Didier Deschamps a key three points.
Erling Haaland and Norway‘s long-awaited return to the World Cup took center stage in the afternoon and the star striker did not disappoint, putting together a first-half brace in a 4-1 blowout win over Iraq.
Then, in prime time, Lionel Messi delivered like only he can, nabbing his first World Cup hat trick to jump into a tie for No. 1 all time in goals scored. It was a great start for reigning champion Argentina as it dispatched Algeria 3-0 in its opener.

Austria takes the lead for real this time as tempers flare
They aren’t calling that one back. Another corner pays off for Austria via an own goal, as a header by Yazan Al-Arab sends the ball into the net. Tempers flare right after that, with players getting separated and Austria’s Marcel Sabitzer shown a yellow card.
That’s going to be treated as a “ball don’t lie” moment in Austria.

Austria goal wiped out by handball
Austria seemingly hit paydirt on a corner, as the Jordanian goalkeeper tried to punch the ball away but it was only a glancing blow. Some ricochets resulted in Marko Arnautovic getting a clear shot at goal for a go-ahead goal.
However, Jordan appeals and VAR finds a handball by Stefan Posch. No goal and it’s still tied.

Jordan’s goalkeeper goies down
Jordan goalie Yazeed Abulaila goes down after some contact to the face during a jump for the ball. He stayed down as if under extreme duress, but Austria couldn’t take advantage of the vulnerable net. He is remaining in the game after receiving some trainer attention

HALF: Austria 1, Jordan 0
Austria leads and has held the clear possession edge, but this has been more back-and-forth than expected (maybe not a surprise with Austria’s aggressive pressing style). Jordan has actually had more shots and shots on goal, Austria simply got the screamer from Romano Schmid.

Jordan has two shots on goal blocked
Jordan gets a prime opportunity to respond, but has two shots blocked, the first by Austria goaltender Alexander Schlager and the second by defender Philipp Lienhart. Jordan asks for a handball call, but replay shows the ball hit Lienhart’s back.

Austria opens the scoring
Austria’s first World Cup goal since 1998 is a beauty by Romano Schmid from outside the penalty area. What a kick.
-
A chance for Jordan
As expected, Austria has largely dominated time of possession in the first 17 minutes, but Jordan has taken a couple shots on goal. It’s latest from Odeh Al-Fakhouri gets pushed high, but it’s the kind of stuff they need to do to pull off the upset.

Final: Argentina 3, Algeria 0
Lionel Messi is one goal away from World Cup history.
The Argentina captain scored the first World Cup hat trick of his career Tuesday night, leading the defending champions to a comfortable 3-0 win over Algeria in Kansas City. Messi scored in the 17th minute, added another after halftime and completed his hat trick late in the match before exiting to a standing ovation in the 80th minute.
Messi is now tied with Miroslav Klose for most World Cup goals all time with 16. He’ll get a chance to top the list Monday vs. Austria.
